Horse Sense’s Kristin Praly chimes in on what kind of teacher she strives to be.

First and foremost I think it is important to look out for the safety and well being of my students and equines.

~ Set the student and horse up for success. Success in not measured in how long you stay in the saddle but by how confident the horse feels before you dismount.

~Leave a horse and student in a better state of mind at the end of a session.  Anyone can make a horse move but what frame of mind are you leaving the horse in?

~ Not give in to the impulsive desires of others. I work methodically.  If the horse and rider are not safe, confident, and ready for the next step, we do not take it.

~Tell people the truth even though it is not always what they want to hear but rather what they need to hear in order to connect with their horse.

~It is one thing to be firm in the necessary time and place and quite another to be a bully.

~ Tie downs and anything that artificially ‘corrects’ your horse for you are never the answer. True communication, feel and timing are the correct answer.  True beauty lies in fluidity and joy, not forced movement.  Yes, it takes more time to train this way so expect to enjoy the journey instead of ‘thrilling’ on speedy results.

~I will forever be a student striving to improve myself in the hopes of helping others.

Safety, Trust, Confidence, and a Better State of Mind ~ therein lies the key for both horse and rider.

Thank You Elizabeth Graves and Harry Whitney for your continued inspiration!

Some Horse Sense Dentistry

Yesterday, Covered Bridges was very lucky to have Jerry come and take care of our horse’s dental needs. He was instrumental in helping Twilight get over many fears of men and mouths. He also helped many other horses that day by giving them stress relief and the gift of being able to use their mouths correctly! Angles are everything. Proper chewing is absolutely necessary for proper grazing and jaw function. The speed at which powered floaters operate make it IMPOSSIBLE to do the precise work that gets the correct angles. Instead you take down too much tooth!!! Horse’s teeth erupt constantly, yes, but are FINITE. Once you use up the tooth there isn’t any more to drop down. Your horse in later years will have nothing to chew with! Please LEARN more about this on Jerry’s Page.. SAVE your horse’s mouths! Convince your vet’s to learn MORE and BE BETTER, more precise, about their floats. Also, you will find that you don’t have to have your horses head on a pole mouth jammed open for 40 minutes. It’s barbaric!! Try being anesthetized, keep standing up and balancing on a pole while trying to breath at an unnatural angle. Head down breathing is MUCH easier on a horse.
There is a better way that doesn’t take any longer, it just takes finesse.

Journeys of the Heart

Today I will be asking my students to write about their understanding of their horses and where they feel they are on in ther journey.  It is always quite an adventure of the heart to put to paper your feelings.  Revelations come forth you didn’t realize you had and words become difficult to write as you are making sense of your feelings..

No self, No problem

The following fb conversation pertains to personal growth.  I find it very important and worth discussing. It is the root of most our societal and horsemanship issues. What do you think of the following?  I would like your opinion!

Shea Stewart
No Self, No Problem……Buddha quote my friend told me the other day and I can’t stop thinking about how simple yet how profound it is.
Another good one from Land of Medicine Buddha’s page today: “Letting go of attachment brings inner satisfaction and peace.”

Always a good a time

If you find Kristin at the barn, she will always find the time to help. If she’s not in the middle of lesson don’t be shy and say, “hi”.
